Enduring
Freedom, A Tribute to Liberty was first suggested as a Liberty Garden by
Keep America Beautiful to all its affiliates in 2002 as a tribute to
those who perished in the attack of 9/11/2001.
Keep
McLennan County Beautiful, a KAB affiliate, decided to expand the
concept as a result of calls from Veterans asking if KMCB was going to
recognize them and their contributions to freedom.
As a
result, now underway, is the creation of “ENDURING FREEDOM, A Regional
Tribute to Liberty”, with ground being broken on November 9, 2005. The
Tribute will be constructed at the HOT Fairgrounds, on Lake Air Drive
and will consist of wall sections that not only pay homage to those who
lost their lives on 9/11, but will also pay tribute to our Law
Enforcement Agencies, our regional Fire Departments and EMS personnel,
and separate wall sections dedicated to our heroes, our veterans, of
Operation Iraqi Freedom, Desert Storm, Persian Gulf, Panama, Lebanon &
Grenada, the Vietnam War, The Korean War, World War II, World War I and
Peace Keeping Missions.
Areas in
the center of this tribute will have smaller walls and benches dedicated
to our heroes who have made this memorial possible....our
major
donors. Names of these donors will be listed on a wall, along with other
recognitions of those who made this project possible. Additionally, the
walkway will have bricks and granite pavers that may be purchased and
engraved with someone’s name, thus creating the
Walk of
Honor. At the center of the tribute will be located pieces of the
Pentagon that were blown out when it was hit by a plane on 9/11. We are
one of only 11 cities to receive these pieces of history.
Please
join us as we honor the fallen with this tribute to freedom...“May the
flights of angels sing thee to thy rest” and say thank you to our
veterans who have sacrificed so much to guarantee our Enduring Freedom.
We
will NEVER FORGET.
